Yes
could someone explain the pros and cons of the 2 types of macro lens?
thanks

also recommendations for a macro lens for nikon d90, would be appreciated!

The prime will be a fixed focal length normally associated with being sharper and having a wider aperture.

A zoom with be more flexible but generally less sharp and narrower apertures.

If you plan on using it soley for macro a wide aperture isn't needed as the shot is normally stepped down to about f9 or f11 to get sufficient depth of field

For true Macro work, you'll need a prime, which as above normally give a 1:1 magnification.

As already said, I don't think anybody makes a zoom macro that goes down to 1:1 unaided, so I think that should answer your question.

The Nikon 105mm f/2.8 VR is hard to beat, but there are cheaper alternatives - all good. There don't seem to be any duff macro lenses about.

I've used both a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 and a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 on a Nikon D70. I ended up buying a Tamron because that came up for sale locally 2nd hand before a Sigma did. The "Macro" designation on zooms generally means that the lens will focus a bit closer than the non-macro version.

thanks folks
will hold out for prime lens. but the nikon is probably a tad too expensive for me!

Look out for 2nd hand lenses, Aperture have a Tamron 90mm macro for £220 atm.

For serious Macro shot, you definitely need a prime. give you wide aperture, sharper image, and 1:1
