Prime Reccomendation?

As prime lenses go from fisheye to supertelephoto it is probably a good idea to give an idea of what you want it for. Will make suggestions much easier.
 
I use a 35mm f1.8 on my D7000, and its a lovely lens. Under your budget as well. Alternatively, you could get the 50mm f1.8 if you wanted something slightly longer. Depends what you want to use it for really. The 50mm would probably be too long for taking shots indoors if thats what you were planning.
 
You fail to say which focal length Vince... I can vouch for the Nikon 35mm f1.8 and there's plenty of shots with it on my photostream if you want to have a look... They're about £100 on here in the classifieds.

Sorry nick firstly , focal lenghth 35mm to 50mm ...........subjects will be portraits of my grandson and dogs indoors and outdoors .............been looking at 50mm 1.8g but no sure because its more for FX i believe

Out of the two id probably go for the 35mm then, especially if you are shooting indoors. But, saying that, the 50mm would make a better portrait lens...aaarrrggghh! Could you sell a kidney and get both? :D

50mm on a FF camera would give you pretty much the same FOV as a 35mm on a D90.
 
I had a 50 on my sony and found the focal length a bit crappy, neither here nor there where as I am much happier with the 35 on a crop body. I think the D90 has a built in motor doesn't it? If so you you could go with the older type D lens and you could get a 50mm f1.8D for about £65 and try it for a week or three then sell it for the same if you're not a fan.

Or, try the focal length with one of your other lenses to see which you prefer.

It will be fine on a D90 too :) Both the 35mm f1.g DX and the 50mm f1.8g are good choices imo.
