Forgive me for being thick, But what exactly does prime lens mean? Do they not zoom at all?

That's right, they have a fixed focal length.

As above, you can not zoom into a subject unless you use your feet :D

Primes usually give better image quality and usually have a larger aperture.

E.G: I have a 14-45mm f3.5-5.6 zoom So at 14mm it's widest aperture is f3.5 (the most amount of light it can let in due to the size of the aperture 'hole'. At 45mm it is only f5.6 so the hole let's in less light than f3.5.

I also have a 20mm f1.7. This means the aperture is larger (bigger hole to let more light in) Smaller number=bigger aperture. Letting more light in means a faster shutter speed can be achieved especially when the camera is on Aperture Priority. A faster shutter speed =less blurry images if hand held.

It also means you get a very small DOF meaning bokeh is easily done.
