Yes
I've been asked by a friend to take some photographs at an outdoor event they are organising and selling prints on the day to the competitors. The prints will be offered in A5 and A4 sizes.

I'm looking for a good quality A4 (or even A3 if funds will stretch that far) to purchase for this and possible future events.

I have no experience of printing shot myself so has anybody got any reccomendations?

It's a tough call, printers are fickle things and ink costs are massive, very possibly £1 per a4. If this is a first shot at the idea I'd use whatever canon, HP or Epson single ink tank printers you can beg steal or borrow remembering to do a dummy run before the day and negotiating sale or return on ink and paper if sales volumes are unpredictable.
If all goes well HP are worth talking to for a more permanent soution.

Taking orders and using a lab will massively save time and cost.

Good luck

John

Thanks for that John. I think the lab solution might be a good option initially, and one I had considered, but usually the competitors get to take their photos with them on the day.

Remember if it is an outdoor event and you are using a genny, you will need one producing "clean" power for the lights pc and printer.
Regarding the printer you ideally need a "Dye Sub" (Dye Sublimation) printer for event printing.

Serach the forums for event photography and dye sub, you should find plenty of info including some companies that will rent you a dye sub peinter and the print material you will need.

Inkjet printers are far too slow for event work. All pro event shooters use dye subs up to 12x8. You could hire a printer but if its a one off then the costs may swallow all your profits or even turn it into a loss!

If you are looking at covering future events then its practical to buy a printer. Most popular print from 6x4 to 9x6 (a change of print media may be needed to cover this range). There are plenty on the S/H market but beware of obsolete models (media hard to buy) and ex kiosk printers that do not work as a standalone. There is one for sale on this site for about £100 but need to check media is still available for it.

Take a look at Photomarts website and/or speak to Mark who'll gladly pass on any advice needed (no need to thank me Mark ).He'll also be able to supply you with mounts & clear fronted bags which you'll also need.

Other items to look for will be some form of shelter if not provided and a generator if power not handy. As you have not stated what type of event it is but you'll also need to ensure you have good visibility and marketing so potential customer will know where you are. It may help by reading this:
