just wandering if someone would tell me a good printer for photos with out breaking the bank

Canon Pixma 4700 or the slightly older 4600

Really pleased with my 4600 and great value at under a hundred quid
 
I've got the Canon 4600. Really pleased with it. Only ever used genuine cartridges though. I use paper branded Kirkland from Costco. Great results.
 
Has Canon sorted out the issue of waste ink pads that they had? I had an i950 that I really liked but one day it stopped working because the waste ink pads were full :thinking: Thinking these were replaceable parts I bought a set. Turns out the whole printer needs to go back to Canon to have them replaced, that cost me £85 and when it came back it stopped working and that was it. I went to an Epson PX710W and it's adequate.

The other issue was that Canon changed their ink types while Epson has been consistent with their cartridge style for a very long time and I don't trust Canon not to do another ink style change.

If you haven't used www.7dayshop.com for inks then have a look, they are very good on price and it's all original stuff. I have used them since 2005 and I recommend them. They are a little slow so don't expect next day delivery from them.

It's the ink that breaks the bank rather than the printer. I'd love to be contradicted but I've not come across non-OEM ink that produces even well coloured photos and as for longevity, that's another matter altogether.

As has been previously said it's cheaper to order prints online. For training we use old HP printers that take hp56 and hp57 inks, these are shoved on the market at low prices by HP nowadays (fleabay and amazon marketplace) and cost a lot less than current HP ink. I also recommend any Canon printer that takes BCi6 ink which is hard to get cheap but as has been said, 7dayshop offer good deals.

Do Canon make any printers that take BCi6 ink any more? I don't think they do. When my i950 died I tried buying a new Canon printer that used the BCi range of inks and I could not find one! I have a drawer full of ink BCi ink cartridges if anybody is interested?

No they don't but there's lots out there and new orig print heads are easily obtained.
You'll get a good price for boxed orig Canon BCi6 ink on fleabay.

I wish that I could echo the positives on the 4700. It may print well and may be under the £100 mark but boy does it make up for the small price tag in the cost of running it.

I have had Epson printers prior to the canon and cost of running was significantly better IMHO. I am appalled at how quick this printer eats cartridges, it takes an age to warm up and I haven't been able to run as a network printer (Mac OSX) from the day I purchased and Canon don't give a stuff

So if I was rating this model I would give it
4 stars on print quality
4 stars for its features
2 Stars for its running costs
2 stars for its useability (network and warm up)

There are better out there.
