how good are home printers? would like to buy a printer for no bigger than around A4 but not sure of the standard these are at? I wouldn't want to bother if using one of the pro labs was loads better.

Inkjets these days are uperb BUT the ink/paper can be expensive so using a lab is generally cheaper for smaller prints - Go A3+ and you can save money buying larger prints but the capital expenditure means you need to sell a few to make that back.

I prefer my inkjet prints to my lab prints. I use an Epson R2400. Almost 6 years old and still fantastic.
