Hi,

I am having alot of problems printing photo's!

1. I have been usinf 'Snapfish' and the colour can be off or they are over cropping the pictures.

2. When cropping pictures in 'Photoshop' does this effect the pictures when they are being printed?

Where does everyone else get there prints done?

Thanks Stacie :)

unless you tell us your process for cropping then we cant answer :)

I get mine done at photobox and they do change the crop slightly... i asked and they said it was in the process and they are aware they do it... but its only a couple of mm ...

When cropping I just crop them to make the subject more central in the picture.

Does that help?

Do you setup the crop sizes when cropping? ie set to 7x5 crop then order 7x5 print?

I run a small lab so let me answer a couple of things to you.

The printers used by photolabs work from a long roll of paper - a bit is cut off and your image is written onto it using a lazer (sometimes LED or even CRT) and that is then passed though the chemistry.

The paper doesn't not always have perfect registration - so you'd end up with a small white sliver on unexposed paper on one or more sides. So a small magnification is added by the machine - usually about 3% - which ensures these edges don't happen.

Colours can vary - usually caused by your monitor being too bright - you adjust the image to look good on your computer - but the lab will be calibrated to the ICC standard - part of which is a much darker screen. Often you'll get far better results from a file that's not been "tweeked" by yourself!
Just go into DIxions/Curries etc and look at the TV's - and you'll see a wide range of colours, saturation and brightnesses. Which one is right? Use a calibrator and your monitor should match the labs screens and their printers!

Various labs may apply some correction to your image - either by eye or by computer - each lab will do something different.

My reccomendation is splash out about £100 - £150 on a monitor calibratior - either a Spyder 3 or a Gretag/xrite i1 display. Both will get your monitor to the international standard - then get the lab to print the file without messing with it. Then what you see is what you get!

Hi Kipax,

I do not know how to set the size of the image in photoshop, I usually just use the crop tool and make it the size I think looks best.

Any idea's?

I went into a shop called 'SnappySnaps' and they helped me use their machine, on there machines it shows you were they will crop so if you are not happy with the crop you can either move the crop or use shrink to fit instead.

Moving forward I need to work out how to crop but keep a standard 6x4 size!

What software are you using?

Click the crop tool on the left hand toolbar, then look up at the top left of the screen and you will see two boxes, width and height, enter 7in into width and 5in into height, use the crop tool on your image and it will crop to 7x5.

That is very basic to help get you started,I hope.

yes thats exactly your problem.. cropping what looks right.. you must set the sizes to crop using the crop tool as fracster says.. once you know how to do that... problem solved:)
