I am now at the point where I have a few images that I thinkare go enough to go on the wall and have got an Epson P50 printer (A4).

When I print, I seem to have two options ...
1) The picture is slightly zoomed to fit the A4 sheet
2) I tell it not to zoom but I end up with a small margin down each of the long side (around 2.5mm each side).

I can understand why :-
My camera is producing 3872 * 2592 pixel images (1.4938 ratio)
A4 is 297mm * 210mm (1.414 ratio)

Question is, what can I do about it ? I really dont like it zooming my picture after I have spent time carefully considering crop.

Problem is, the ratio my camera is producing, I cannot find a standard paper size.

I know (hope) there is a simple solution, please enlighten me !

Okay, think I am ready to answer my own dumb question !

My sensor is an APS-C, hence 1.5 ratio on my images (funny the pixel count from the actual image works out at 1.49 but pentax quote 1.54 ?).

A4 paper is 1.414 ratio, therefore there is **** all I can do with it other than zoom into the picture a little bit.

BUMMER

Maybe need to try it on A4 for proof then get them printed 12x8 or bigger.

At least I have no embarasment at asking such a stupid question :$

when composing and shooting always leave a "bit of slack" so you can crop and resize to the ratio of the paper size youre printing on, ie, if printing to a 7x5 paper crop and resize to 7x5 @ 300ppi

It can also depend also on the content of the image. Setting your image in an A4 canvas in Photoshop, can you fill any of the white are with your subject background (by cloning or CS5's Content Aware Fill)? Very easy if the background is plain.

Not ideal but it's always better to think about how you want to see the image and compse slightly loose if you plan to use a different print ratio than the 3:2 ratio your camera produces.

Thanks for feedback, had not really noticed befor but the shot I printed today was very tight at the top and the small zoom destroyed it. TBH, when I think about the overlap in the frame, I will also need to leave a small border on the paper.
Every days a school day :-)

You may not have resized correctly. You don't "zoom" the image. You should crop it to the size you require and that means you can keep the top part you want.

Cheers, got my head round it now, cropped the image to 4mm less than A4 each side then set canvas size to exactly A4, the 2mm border then allows for the frame overlap.

First pics now on the wall
