Printing woes yet again

Hi all,

I have tried various printers and the latest were DSCL, nothing wrong with what they have done to be fair it is my setup.

I only have a laptop and I do have Huey colour calibrator but black and white images and clour ones with a lot of dark black areas always come back too dark. My laptop is a Dell , The majority of my colour photos are fine and I am happy with the results

How can I resolve this, the only way I have found is to use Loxley but that is not solving my problem of printing black and white snaps for friends etc.

I have also been reading about the fact a screen is lit from behind but a photo is reflected light?

Its not the colour that is a issue, from what I have heard the calibrators will not correct brightness and contrast, it seems to be a major issue with Black and White images

Is your laptop screen a tft? Mine is and the main reason I dont use it for image processing is because the blacks don't display well on it. It could be you're compensating for the screen and ending up with too much black.

Sounds like a brightness/gamma issue.

Laptop screens are notoriously bad for processing photos.

Tis a bit strange that you are gertting good results from Loxley and with your colour stuff, but not with the Mono/Darker ones. hmmmmmm.

I agree with Gandi, a laptop is not the ideal screen to use. Are you getting Loxley to adjust the images for you in addition to your adjustments. Also are you getting the Huey to monitor ambient light and adjust for it. This will affect the screen calibration. Try turning off the ambient monitoring and see if it makes a difference .

Are Loxley printing you B&W images or are these going to another lab.

It could be your screen is simply too bright. manually turn down the screen brightness until the prints and the screen match. then if you can get the Huey to measure the screen brightness. Now try using this new setting and see how the B&W prints come out
