Problem canon 450D (green smudge on picture)

Someone i know has a problem with is canon 450D. It seems to be a problem that come back from time to time without noticing a pattern in why it happens. It isn't lens related because the same happen with 2 lenses. From what he says he is doing exposure varying from 20 to 60secondes and if he noticed the problem he switches the camera off and back on and the problem is gone.


Any idea?

Possibly light entering the viewfinder and creeping round the mirror box onto the sensor.
 
Or the northern lights?!? :)

That wouldn't be too much of a bad news. Also it seems it disapear once the camera is turned off and back on and picture are taken at night with minimal surrounding light. But it is always a serious possibility, in which case would it always be the same colour?

Must be the Western lights then!!!

Further thinking (and a look at a couple of test shots I did a while back to demonstrate that VF light leakage can occur) reminded me that the leaks I saw were more of a pinkish hue than green but mine were on a Nikon (and it could be different on Canons).

TBH, depending on the owners circumstances and permission from SWMBO, it could be a good excuse for him to upgrade!
