Problem with AVG Free.

For the last few weeks at least I've been having trouble opening sites.

I use Crazy Browser which has something called "Groups."

With this I can group together whatever sites I want and by clicking on a particular group they all open in tabs.

For instance I have a group for "Photography" whch opens 6 different tabs including Talkphotography etc.

This has worked perfectly for years but recently only one or two sites open while the rest take forever.

And if I then click on a link within these sites even they take ages to open.

I've tried other browsers but they all have the same problem.

I thought it might be Zone Alarm but closing it down had no effect and the sites still took ages to open.

But it turns out it looks like it is the free edition of AVG.

I closed down the parts of AVG I could and that seemed to cure the problem.

Then I uninstalled it and downloaded the latest version.

I re-installed it but only ticked the box which said "AVG for Windows."

I didn't install the Link Scanner and that seems to be what causes the problem.

Now I can surf the web and everything seems to be back to normal.

I've noticed that a few people have been having problems with opening sites - so if you have AVG installed then I would uninstall it and the re-install but without the Link Scanner component.

Did you recently update to AVG 9.0?

My computer became pretty un useable after this update (running Win XP pro) and have now moved to Avast which seems to be working OK.

I could not find the setting in AVG to stop the HD chundering and the PC becoming slow and un responsive, so it had to go.

Yup that's exactly what I did (the Free version of AVG 9.0) and what I've been getting.

And I'm running XP Pro as well.

But as I said re-installing it without the Link Scanner seems to have put it right.

I like AVG and have had it for years and this is the first problem I've had with it.

for what it's worth, I stopped using AVG a couple of years ago as it's real-time scanning seemed to be more intrusive than on my partners pc (same spec) using avast.
I swapped over, and have been on avast ever since.
I know that doesn't really answer your question though :D

AVG is pretty poor now. Way too bloated and not overly effective. I use Antivir instead.

I stopped using AVG a few years ago because of a very similar problem, one day everything fine then progressively web sites became unreachable, some would be fine but others AVG just seemed to block for no reason and no way to stop it short of a complete uninstall.

I had similar problems with AVG 8, I posted on this forum at the time.
Changed to Avast on the desktop and Avira on the laptop.
I have now changed to Microsoft Security Essentials - works very well for me.
