Problem with Canon S95 sensor?

Hi

I bought my son a secondhand S95 a couple of months ago (he paid for it....) and all seemed well until it developed a spot/blemish/blob in the top r/h quadrant. There's nothing visible on the lens or screen.

He carries it in his pocket without a case so I suppose it's possible that it's picked up a bit of fluff on the sensor.

Any ideas from looking at the test shots what it might be?

He's a bit hard up (of course!) so doesn't want to send it to Canon and leave himself exposed to a big bill. Obviously he can live with it and edit the marks out.

I suppose we could try compressed air in the battery compartment and see if that dislodges any foreign matter. That's assuming it isn't a pixel issue.

Any ideas folks?

That's just a bit of dust on the sensor by the looks of it.

Obviously not as straight forward to sort out as with a removable lens DSLR though.

I would contact either Canon at Elstree or the nearest approved service centre to you. You can find a list of them here...

It shouldn't cost too much if it is out of warranty.

I wouldn't recommend trying to dislodge it yourself as you are likely to introduce more problems than you solve.

Thanks for the reply Chris.

I suppose a speck of dust on a tiny sensor could show up this big!

I haven't had a chance to inspect the camera myself yet but we'll probably end up sending out to Canon for a clean which makes me think it'll be worth trying a blower first as if any more dust is dislodged they'll sort it out.

This is the first time I've experienced specks on a compact screen. I'm very familiar with it on DSLRs....

Not sure how you would get dust in a sealed body. You've tried cleaning the lens I assume.

Exactly! That's why I've asked for advice and comments here. It doesn't look like a typical dust spec but what's typical

Nothing visible on the lens.

There is an extending lens and hence the potential of dust for getting pumped in when the air moves about. There will be some level of sealing but it won't be 100%. I've not experienced dust in a compact myself but a quick google will show you that it isn't uncommon.

Try sticking it in Av and shooting against a plain bright background with a small aperture, the dust fleck should come more into focus then.
