Problem with D80 losing power.

I bought my D80 second hand about a year ago and have had this problem pretty much since I got it, though it seems to be getting worse now.

The problem is when using the camera, right after I take a picture, it shuts itself off and flashes the dead battery symbol on the top screen. Switching it off and on again fixes it. It seems to happen on the first few pictures taken in a session and usually doesn't happen after that. And though it may be my imagination but I feel like it's worse when it's very hot or very cold...

I got some cheap eBay batteries to see if it was that, but they do the same thing. Happens with all lenses too.

I am reluctant to take it to a shop and have it looked at as I plan on buying a new camera very soon. Just wondered if anyone had the same problem or any ideas on what it might be?
 
Most DBS issues with the D80, and indeed with Nikons in general, are lens mount related, might be worth cleaning the electronic contacts and the mount itself to see if that makes any difference.

This may be the problem as sometimes it says there is no lens attached and a quick nudge of the lens and its fixed.

Spot on Graham, I had the same thing with a D80, a clean of the contacts with a pencil eraser did the trick :thumbs:
 
check the firmware and if its not the latest ( 1.03 ) do an upgrade

its a known issue and the firmware upgrade solved mine
