Problem with Jessops Flash (with sample photos)

I've been using a Nikon SB400 flash for the last 7 months without a problem and treated myself to a larger Jessops AFD360 flash (full rotation and angling, and more to play with).

However I am not having much success with it. I think there might be a problem with the flash as it is not performing how I expect or how my Nikon Flash is performing.

I normally shoot with the flash bouncing off the ceiling, so all the test photos are with the flash pointing straight up apart from the last set where the Jessops flash is pointing directly forward (the only time it seems to detect focal length, iso etc.)

I have performed a series of photos at 1/100 and f/2.8. I varied the ISO, lights on or off and then no flash, nikon flash and Jessop flash.

From the test photos you can see how there isn't enough light inthe room and only at iso 800 does it get close to good exposure levels.

The Nikon flash is pretty consistent across all ISO levels and if the lights are on or off, with better detail coming out in the higher ISO photos.

The Jessops flash is only consistent when photos are taken with the flash pointing directly forward. With the flash pointing up it is useless and is trial and error with every photo.

Is this normal, anyone else with the Jessops AFD360 have this problem? Do other flashes only expose correctly when pointing forward? have you just learnt how much to under expose by?

Any help appreciated :)

Nikon SB400 (the little one)

Both were in auto mode (the SB400 only has auto)

The display shows ittl (and bl whatever than means)

It seems to adjust the power when the flash is pointing forward
