Hi guys & girls as some of you may know I spend a lot of Sundays in a field taking photos of idiots in cars, well last weekend was our national championships so off I went only to find a small problem with my lens :-(

The problem is with the zoom, when I zoom in past 180 it gets slightly stiffer and is not as smooth, now it's just about usable but very off putting. Ive put the problem down to dust (no sign of it in the lens) as it can be very dusty at times.
My guess would be that the lens just needs cleaning I presume this needs to be done by canon, so any idea on cost of even if it's worth doing ? The lens was bought second hand so do I get it sorted or buy a new one? Or better yet put up with it and save for an upgrade??

A used 55-250 is around the £100 mark so it's really not worth spending any money to get one cleaned or serviced.
Buy another and sell yours on as 'spares or repairs' would be my suggestion. ;)

You can pick up a used early Sigma 70-200 f2.8 for around £300.
No OS but at 2.8 you can use very high shutter speeds to combat shake.
Not as good as the Canon 70-200 2.8 by any stretch of the imagination but MUCH cheaper. ;)

A friend of mine has also suggested looking at sigma as an upgrade, I know what your saying about high shutter speed but I dont use very high shutter speeds as it tends to "freeze" the cars and make them look like they are parked.

Im off to look and spending the kids Christmas present money lol
