Problem with my fw800 port from Lacie to iMac

It's a Lacie 320Gb D2 hard drive that's been giving me problems. It works fine using the FW400 port, but the FW800 doesn't. You hear the drive starting but it doesn't pop up on the desktop. I've tested another hard drive with exactly the same spec (and different cable) on my mac and as I feared, it's the mac which is at fault as this one too won't work on the FW800 port on my iMac, but it works fine on my friend's Macbook Pro.

Has anyone encountered this problem on their iMacs and can suggest a possible solution? My iMac is now 2 and a half years old, so out of warranty...

I have indeed experienced this precise same issue and during a very inconvenient time.

The problem.....was a break in my firewire 800 cable. :D

Fair enough, though my problem isn't the cable, it's the mac. I'm thinking it could either be a problem with the FW800 port or something in the software isn't clicking.

You could try cleaning the contacts of the port with some isoprop alcohol? Either that or a fresh install of the osx maybe?
