Problem with my monitor/video card

tried to log on to my destop pc and was confronted with a message

'out of range video reset to 1600 x 1200 60hrz' (or something very similar)

widows loaded but could not view anything.

I ran safe mode set up and changed to a default setting and rebooted but I got the same message again, now I can't, even get to the safe mode boot up.

Any help would be much appreciated.

The video card is a radeon x1300 and the monitor is a dell 2007fp running windows xp sp3

What happens when you try to boot to safe mode? Do you have an XP disc available? Does the BIOS POST screen appear before Windows loads?

Also, if you have another monitor around, you might want to try using that and seeing if the problem still occurs.
 
I have just tried a system restore.......see if that helps.....

the bios did post, xp disc....not sure ...it is 4 years since I bought this thing.....

I thought you couldn't see anything when it booted?

If you can get it too boot, and you're able to see, try re-installing the Video card driver. Hopefully it's a software problem, but it's possible your video card is broken.

I wasn't able to see, I managed to get to the boot screen, eventually and I started in safe mode, uninstalled the drivers, re booted and it has started up but with the original driver. Phew!

I have just tried updating the driver from the ATI site and my card is no longer on their list, it has been mothballed and they will only release it in 'SEVERE' cases...wtf......the one loaded is from 2006.....any one know where I can get updated drivers from????

You will need to speak English if you get technical on me. :D
 
If everything works then best leave alone would be my advice.

Providing everything is appearing at the correct resolution, you should be ok. As it's quite an old graphics card, I would try updating the driver through Windows Update - and if it doesn't update just leave it.
 
Thanks all, it appears to be stable now and I have not updated the driver.....even Photoshop is running quicker.....

Come to think of it I had an auto update on my machine this morning so possibly it did something that it did not agree with.

I will not update unless I need to.
