Problem with Sigma 50-500 Lens

I have a Sigma 50-500 Lens which has stopped focussing. It's been back to the repair shop and for a while it was fine. However, it has now gone back to stopped focussing.

I was photographing in good lighting conditions so I don't believe it was that. It actually sounds more like a mechanical failure because the lens seems to be "searching" and making an odd noise as if it's struggling to focus.

Has anyone else had these problems before and can it be easily rectified?

Have you tried it again in good light when there is a subject with high contrast to aid focussing?
