Problem with uploading

Afraid i may be having a senior moment.:)

Some time ago i took (a lot) of feeding red kites. I wasnt happy with the software i had, so protected them on the card in the camera (d300). Saved the pennies and today received some more suitable software.

When i now try to upload them to my laptop i get the message "no new pictures found on this media". I thought maybe it was because they were protected, so removed that, made no difference at all.

Took a few random shots to prove the card is ok and they were duly found and uploaded.

Is there anything simple i am missing? Would appreciate any ideas

Thanks Brian

Pics are JPEG. Uploading done by usb from camera to laptop. Dont think that software comes into it, it appears to be just an uploading problem. If i took a pic now, i could upload it with no problem, its just the ones that i took some months ago that are not found.

What operating system are you using?

When you uploaded the pics you have taken recently, did you drag and drop the files to a folder on your laptop? How did you select which pics you wanted to upload?

Could you get access to a card reader to see what exactly is on the card?

perhaps a card reader is the cleanest way to capture data..no software required...and what is there on the card is seen by the pc..or laptop

if you put the card in the camera can you review them there..if so remove the lock

I can review the pics that are on the card by using the camera. I have removed the protection as previously stated. Operating system is vista (cannot see that as a problem as i can take pics and then immediately upload them).

somehow those shots arent being reviewed by vista's built in os

i would try if possible to use a card reader and skip the pop up window..'what do you want to do with these'

go into C: and see if the card reader is registering...f/g/h etc...i think vista can cope with that...then open the appropriate gate to view the pics..f/g/h etc..copy to a folder in C:

i never got on with vista so perhaps an upload on to another os may release the data and make it available for transfer via a stick or dvd

sorry i cant go beyond that from my experience

Not all that computer literate but think i get the gist of what you are saying!! One thing i have just noticed is that the pics are am after are numbered 1-71 anything i add to the card is starting from 1 again. Driving me nuts, thanks anyway.

it sounds like the camera has done something to the card and thinks it has been formatted...starting numbers afresh...i think

best of luck and more input from others...please

The fact that you can see the pics in camera means that the pics are on the card. The method and software that you are using to upload seems to be renaming the pics and also it thinks that the previous pics have already been uploaded, that is why new pics are uploading but not old ones and the numbers are resetting.

When you plug the camera in via USB cable and switch it on, close any windows that may pop up. Go to "Computer" and double click on the D300 icon under "Portable Devices", then go to "Removable storage" and open the folders. Your pics should be there and you can then copy them to a folder on your computer.

As MrCrow said, a card reader where you take the card out of the camera and put it in the reader attached to the computer is a better solution than plugging the camera in via USB cable.

can't help but just letting you know your not the only one to do this....i never found my shots and gave up in the end.....but i didn't know anyone who could help at the tme ...better luck

What is the full file name of the first "lost" file?
What is the full file name of a file you add on now?

Thanks for all the input guys. I now have the pics in a folder on the computer, used the methods suggested above. Still dont know why they wont upload normally, but what the hell, at least i have not lost them:D

Thanks again, Brian

Glad you got it sorted.

What has probably happened is that a piece of software has taken over control of downloading and renaming pics, hence my questions. What you did was stop the software taking over and manually copying the pics, thereby maintaining control over the process.
