Problem with website domain name company going bust

my line manager at work has asked me some questions about hosting/domains etc as the company who she got her domain name and hosting off has gone bust

I can sort hosting as its not a huge site but how the hell do we go about swapping the nameservers for the site with the site being down and no access? is there any way to get the name back quickly and easily or to change the nameservers to the the new servers the site will be stored on?

I've done a little digging and found the name wasn't to expire until 2012 but there were changes made to the account on the 7th May, I think this will be when the company went out of business

\Any help with this would be great, its quite an important site for her

apparently 123reg now own the domains since the company disappeared, the company in question is powersofthosting

I will pass on the suggestions also as it is a .co.uk name
 
I had a similar problem some years ago: hosted my website on a sever that must have been in some little twerps bedroom. When he pulled the plug, I thought I was stuffed. After a lot of toing and froing and sending of IDs via fax I was able to establish I was the registrant and got the name servers changed. Something of pfaff. Now I am careful to get domain and hosting from what I hope are reliable companies!
 
She had used the same company for around 10 years which gave everyone using them no reason to worry, when I googled them earlier there were a lot of long term customers with complaints of late of there on goings, makes you wonder who we can actually trust nowadays

I use who I think to be a big company worldwide for mine in the hope that I don't have that problem (I use GoDaddy)
 
I take it the company that went down also handled the domain name purchase? The reason I ask is because your hosting provider has nothing to do with your domain name - you should simply login with the details provided by your domain name provider (or call them) and change the nameservers from there.

If the hosting company who went down also purchased the domain name on your behalf then you have got huge problems as they are technically the owner of the page despite what the registration details say.

That should be the case - and you're very fortunate.

Many years ago, I had domain registrar mysteriously move to another company and all domains had to re-register. Unfortunately, the new owners didn't play ball and I lost a coveted two-letter domain name on .cx At the time, I was only using it for emails so not too much damage was done.

I dunno about that.. a 2 letter domain would be worth a fortune now :) If only we knew.. I was buying domains many many yrs ago.. if only I knew how wanted some would be..
