Right I decided to decipher numerous sets of instructions and create a simple set of instructions for WP. Unfortunately I am having a few problems myself.
Problem 1
The instructions I am using say that the configuration pref plane doesn't work properly and that you should start MySQL manually. It give these instructions for that:
In one terminal window type:
[1] sudo /usr/local/mysql/bin/safe_mysqld
Close that terminal window, and start another:
[2] sudo mkdir /var/mysql/
[3] sudo ln -s /tmp/mysql.sock /var/mysql/mysql.sock
Youll need to manually restart mySQL using the above steps, every time you reboot your system.
BUT when I type [1] it asks for a password. I assume this is either my user or the root password but NEITHER of these works!
HOWEVER if I ignore the warning about the pref plane not working and actually check mySQL it does actually appear to be running!!
Problem 2
During the mySQL setup it says type the following:
[1] $ mysql -u root
[2] > drop database test;
[3] > delete from mysql.user where User = '';
[4] > flush privileges;
[5] > set password for root@localhost = password('{ROOTPASS}');
[6] > set password for root@127.0.0.1 = password('{ROOTPASS}');
[7] > set password for 'root'@'{HOST}.local' = password('{ROOTPASS}');
[8] > quit
This all works fine except when I type [7] it responds with:
ERROR 1133 (42000): Can't find any matching row in the user table
I have double checked and {HOST} is set correctly to MacbookPro with the {ROOTPASS} in each set to the correct root password.
Problem 3
When I try and start Word Press for the first time with:
http://localhost/~darren/wp-admin/install.php
I get the error message:
Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at localhost:/tmp/mysql.sock. This could mean your host's database server is down.
Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?
If you're unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.
