I have recently been having some boot up problems. For a while now when i turn the power on the pc makes some loud clicking noises Click... Click.... Click.... Click.... and then would load fine. Then a few days ago it would boot, do those clicking noises and it would come out of dos i would have an error saying "cant detect boot up device. please connect and press a key to continue" By pressing reset it would then load into windows fine.

Now i am having a big problem because it wont boot up after doing the first reset it keeps giving me that error and after 20 minutes of resetting and waiting it finally clicked in. Can anyone help me with ideas of the problem

:agree: sounds like the harddrive is spluttering, especially given the "cant detect boot up device. please connect and press a key to continue".

How old is the harddrive?

backup any stuff you dont want to lose, your hard drive is failing.

ditto...it happened to me a while ago, at least you have a (narrow) window of opportunity do something about it before it goes completely t**ts up

Clicking is sign of failing hard drive, I would back up data as fast as possible and replace with new hard drive.

If it gets really bad and you cant boot up at all... Stick the hard drive in the freezer for a few hours... I had to do this a few years ago and it really works!!

thanks all. i would have worked it until smoke came out and it caught fire. I have backed the lot up and it has survived the process. I got someone to look at it and he said he could mirror the hard drive if anything goes wrong, but i like to have insurance that everything is saved
