problems with Hahnel remote

I've purchased a Hahnel remote to use with my D300 but I'm having problems getting it to work. I get it all rigged up and get the lights to synchronise (green for half press red for full press) but nothing happens on the Camera - no focusing no shutter release, nadda. Am I doing something wrong?

I'll be honest I don't know Nikon stuff but on my old 450d there was a setting in with the self timer settings to activate a remote control, is there similar on your camera?
