Problems with manfrotto head plate

I've recently got my hands on a manfrotto tripod but there's a problem with the mountning plate - the piece of metal that should push in as the screw is tightened isn't



So when attached to the camera it is lob sided. Any ideas how to fix this ?



I've tried removing the screw but it just rotates...

How is it held in place? The other holes should give a clue. Are they threaded?

It's a stud for use with a video camera.
 
Try tapping the end gently with a hammer. Note the gently! If it moves with the gentle tap, keep tapping until it drops out. You might need to use a suitable drift to get it below the top face of the QR plate and put the bottom of the protruding pin over a gap or hole.
 
bizzarely guys even though it just rotated in my fingers after enough turns with a screwdriver it did eventually come out after the hammer hit failed.

presume it serves no purpose for a dslr mount ?

Nope.
At least, I don't know of a camera that has a corresponding hole, though there might well be one.
