Hi guys

My year and a half old 50D started showing signs of dying on me today. The main lcd screen was changing to different displays/black screen without any buttons being pressed, and the small joystick button started on moving up, and has now totally given up!

Any help, advice gratefully received.

Kind regards

Sarah

Hmmm doesnt sound too promising :( Im assuming you have taken out the battery for a few mins before trying again.

Did you by any chance get the camera damp. Seems the later models with a joystick let water in where the stick enters the body. Typical of this is the moving to the top of the screen problem.

I haven't yet, I will do that now and let you know how it goes. :) Thank you for quick reply. Have to admit I'm scared!

Okay I've changed battery to a fully charged, same thing is happening. :(

Ah thanks guys! Shall put it in the airing cupboard now and will let you know how I get on with it tomorrow!

It would also help if you have water absorbent material to go in the bag, such as silica gel pads, CaCl2, etc... Take out the battery as it would reduce the chance of more damage done.

I think you want your camera looked at since the circuit boards might go rusty in a while. When they do it will be the end of the game.

put in airing cupboard overnight.

Note, do not put it in the airing cupboard with damp laundry at the same time, as this will result in a humid atmosphere and will not achieve the desired result!

(I do agree that damp in the electrics is a likely culprit if the body is not weather sealed)

My 5D2 had a little tantrum when I was shooting in some light drizzle, and the problem was the joystick - I could only select a few of the AF points. A couple of hours later it was dry and fully functional once more.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you Sarah, hope it works out ok.

Okay, took it out the airing cupboard, put in battery, memory card, turned it on and....

IT WORKS! (At least for now!) :D

Thanks guys!

Phew! :)

I have to say that based on my 5D2 experienced I am pretty unimpressed with Canon's claims for the improved weather resistance for the 5D2 (and no doubt the 50D as well). To experience the camera malfunctioning in light drizzle, barely needing a brolly, is a bit of a joke. I know they don't claim that these cameras match up to 1 series sealing, but frankly, why bother making a song and dance about the sealing at all if it is basically sh!t? I recall very well the claims of improved sealing when the cameras were launched. They should not have bothered. Here's what the White Paper says about the two cameras....

In both camera bodies, the weather and dust seals have been improved around the battery
compartments and memory card doors, and increased precision in the alignment of the
magnesium alloy external cover seams and in the optimal design of camera parts and
structures contribute to the cameras’ dust and water resistance. Internal gaskets and sealing
materials are used extensively at the cameras’ buttons, tripod sockets, and surrounding
the LCDs. As a result, the EOS 5D Mark II now has dust and water resistance that is
almost equal to that of the EOS-1N—Canon’s top-of-the-line professional 35mm SLR
for most of the 1990’s.

Well if they weren't going to bother with sealing the joystick it seems to me there was not much point sealing the rest. With the camera slung around one's neck, guess which bit faces up to the heavens, and guess which part of the camera has a nice little indent to capture the water perfectly. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link and a camera is only as weatherproof as its weakest seal.

I have to admit I wasn't particularly concerned at first (obviously when it rained, we went straight in doors) - I wiped the back of the camera with my sleeve and didn't think anything else of it because of the 'weather sealing' :D

Excellent news. We use a 50d and I noticed in the spec that the weatherproofing is very modest indeed certainly less than 7d though I think 40d had none at all.
