I had to get a new mouse the other day. The old one has the round plug but the shop did not have any as "they are old fashioned" so he sold me one to plug into USB socket.
This I did & it worked a treat. First ime I have used an optical mouse.
I took some shots yesterday, came home, plugged in my card reader & after two hours it still had not transferred files onto computer.
I selected one shot ( I usually shoot a basic jpeg & a RAW)
Even transferring one shot took six mins.
I then tried to open NX. It wont!
Then I tried my external hard drive. It will not open either.
I still have an old elements two which opens & internet is working now after a bit of a battle with a trojan.

Any thoughts or ideas?:thinking:
 
Might be a conflict with the mouse have you tried removing it? how many usb ports do you have on your pc and can you try another? I must say I've never had a problem with the mouse interfering before, but that might be because I've used wireless mice for years.
 
sounds like the machine is as old as the ps2 mouse.....

generally the usb mouse would not have caused your problem, but as this occurred at the similar time as the new usb mouse, its feasable that your blaming the mouse.

i'd suggest a servive on your pc to start with.
 
Did you replace the mouse because your old mouse stopped working or was just erratic in working.

If it was the latter I would suggest power down the pc unplug the new mouse, plug in the old mouse, power up and then check if you are able to access your external HD and that the reader is working OK.

If it was the former is the new mouse functioning 100% OK and what brand is it?

I removed the mouse. The old one though working when removed will not work now.
When i removed the new mouse & plugged in the card reader in one of the two slots at the front, it tried to start. Then I plugged mouse into the other slot & the mouse would not work either.
Took card reader out & mouse worked.:shrug:
 
The round socket was probably a 'PS2' connector. you can get an adaptor to convert a USB plug to PS2. Microsoft used to give them away with early USB mice. An adaptor might be your easiest answer.

I'll have to search my cupboards but I've probably got one somewhere if you want it.

A PS2 mouse will only work after a reboot btw.

I tried all that several times:bang:
The new mouse is working fine. It is a Sweex which I must admit I have never heard of but then I know very little about such things

Did that. In fact my external hard drive is plugged in their. The mouse works fine from there but not the hard drive now.

Cheers Robert. I will have a look for one when the shops get back to normal. This of course does not explain why NX will not start up:shrug:
 
Windows can be stupid sometimes about which socket usb things are plugged into. Have you tried swapping the connections ... as daft as it sounds :)

But did the old mouse still work? If yes what about the external HG & reader - the issue is possibly in your new mouse.

The only one that works now is the new mouse. The old mouse was working but was a bit "sticky". When I removed the new mouse & plugged in the old one it had stopped working.
 
No idea on Nikon software. My scanner software will not start unless it can detect the scanner is plugged in. maybe your software is looking for something on usb it can't find?

Did you install any drivers when you installed the new mouse?

On the old mouse are any pins bent in the plug?

No & No
Plugged in the new mouse & it worked, later when I plugged it into another slot a message came up "found new equipment " or something like that.

OK, when you originally installed the reader & ext. HD did you install any s/w drivers for those devices?

OK, what I would suggest is to go the the manufacturers web site for those 2 devices, look for reference to support or download drivers and find the current driver for your devices. Just download onto your pc. Make sure that both these devices are unplugged and install one of the drivers, reboot the pc and then plug that device it and [hopefully] device should be found by the system. That being the case make sure it works OK and then repeat for the other device.
 
Tried plugging the mouse only into the back and the other two items into the front?

A few years back, some motherboards (Asus for one) used to have power problems, they didn't supply quite enough juice for some devices, or for more than one device at a time. If that's the problem with you, you can buy a powered usb hub to take the load off the mobo. Or if you have a pci slot free you can buy a pci usb hub.
 
Just a thought-But does the external drive use its own power supply,or is it fed only from the USB port?
My PC throws a wobbly at times if certain items are plugged into front USB ports when starting up,and thats with a 1200W PSU..
Could be that the new USB has pushed the power supply capabilities just a little too far...
 
with it being an older system i think you simply have too many USB devices connected and there isnt enough power to run all the devices. The east answer is to clean your old mouse (probably dirty rollers making it stick) and reconnect everything as before to see if it works.

As for programmes not loading you did say you had virus/trojan issues so that might be part of the answer.
 
Up & running again folks! Thanks for all your help & suggestions.

Not sure why as I tried this before, but this morning before switching on I plugged in my old mouse after removing the optical one. Switched on & all seems to be working as normal again.

At some point I would like to replace this old computer but now that we are running again I will put it off for another day.

I will be asking for advice too before I purchase a new one.
