Hmm, today when I was on MSN, photoshop and on Safari my computer just randomly switched off well the power button was on and the wifi button :s

Anyways my computer gets really HOT. and i sit it on my desk in my room or the unit in the kitchen.

I guess it's over heating but why? I'm not very good with this sort of stuff?!

I nearly freaked out since all my work is on here, but is now on my external lol. It's fine the now but i restarted it because i felt it was getting really hot again?

My brothers ye-olde-day Toshiba laptop has had the fan all but fail and it shuts itself off when it over heats. Solution (albeit a very temporary one) is to have the laptop raised off the surface with something small...match box sized. It lets the air flow a bit better underneath and gives extended useable time but it'll need a new fan....or laptop!

laptops can run very hot if you dont keep them ventilated well. might be clogged vents if you use it on soft surfaces like sofas and duvets etc.

im now using something lets hope it works

I used it on my duvet ones and well it done the same, never have done that again!!!

I fix a lot of laptops and, other than physically damaged ones, the fault league table is.......

1 failed HDs
2 failed DC socket
3 failed optical drive
4 failed fans

If you can rule out you blocking the vents you can try.....

Blowing the dust out...... be careful you don't blow the dust inside if you are using a dust blower AND DO NOT USE A VACUUM CLEANER (the static can kill your computer)

Take the lid off and remove the fan then clean it with compressed air then a quick spray with silicon spray but not too much as it will attract more dust!

Replace the fan.....

What is the exact model of the laptop?

It wouldn't surprise me if the problem is bad ventilation as Cowasaki says.

Check that the fan is running. Also check there is a reasonable flow of air from the exhust ports. Additionaly make sure any intake ports are clear as well. If all seems well then I would suspect a rather large amount of fluff and other miscellany are in the laptop.

Some machines run hoter than others, but one that gets as hot as yours doesn't sound right. If the machine is still under warranty , or covered by some breakdown agreement than I would suggest you get it checked.

It's not difficult on a lot of machines to get inside them and give them a clean, but if you're not familiar with doing this then leave it a specialist.
