Processing film abroad

What was your experience of this, is it worthwhile.

One of the last films I brought back through the scanners was shocking, despite being assured that it was ok to put through the machine.

I always used to get my film developed by locals when I was abroad. C41 is a little more difficult to screw up than E6 or mono.

If I had to bring it home, I would carry it in my pockets and ask for it to be inspected by hand rather than put it through a scanner.

Modern day scanners are much better though, so ask the airport before travelling. They should be able to tell you if they're film safe or not . . .

Unless it's a very high ISO film (>1600) then a regular airport x-ray scanner should make little difference. I've put rolls of film through those on multiple occasions with no discernible ill effects. When I went to New York some rolls got scanned several times as many of the attractions have x-ray scanners too.

The new CT scanners will probably knacker your film though, regardless of ISO, so my advice there is to put the rolls in a clear ziplock-style bag (out of their packaging and canisters) and politely request a hand check. I've had no problem doing this on multiple trips via Manchester airport. Don't load film into a camera before going through security as the camera will probably have to go through the scanner.

I was worried about my films going through CT scanners a couple of weeks ago. Both Gatwick and Bergen hand checked them without issue. I did present them as @FishyFish describes.

The problem getting them processed abroad maybe the same as here in that 1hr/next day processing isn't on every high street or at supermarkets now.

I have found a couple of camera shops and by the look of them have the usual stuff. they are 50 mile away

Did you take the 120 out of its wrapper Nige?

Yes Manchester has CT scanners.

I didn't take any 120 but if I had I'd have left it in the sealed wrappers I think. You can always open them if requested.

FFS thats probably half my film knackered that I took earlier in the year.
