Hi all..
I have a Nikon D90. It shoots NEF (RAW) files and JPEG. I use an old Adobe 7 to tweak, if needed, my JPEG’s. It won’t process NEF files so I don’t shoot RAW..
I’d like to use RAW and see how it can be pushed and processed. Can anyone recommend the best software for processing the Nikon NEF RAW file !?!? Would it be Nikons Capture NX2, or something else ???.

Thanks guys :)

Photoshop 7 will with the RAW plug-in ;)

Alternatively, grab yourself lightroom, that works great for me ;)

Would that allow me to adjust the exposure and wb etc using the old ps7 ??....if not I might consider either Lightroom or Capture NX2

cheers

Yeah, have a look here and a few pics down is a screen shot of the options

Scrap that, you'll need the Nikon NEF plugin. The plugin is called "Nikon NEF Plugin LE 8bi" Finding it may well be the hardest task now though.

Photoshop 7 will not handle NEFs from a D90. The earliest version of PS that will is PS CS3 with Camera Raw 4.6.

Lightroom and Capture NX will both handle D90 NEFs. However, if all you want to do is WB and exposure, why not try View NX that came with your D90, or download it for free from Nikon.

Another alternative is to download the free DNG converter from Adobe, convert the NEFs to DNGs which should work in PS7, while retaining all the benefits of RAW.

You can adjust the white balance and convert the nef files into 16bit tif using the software the came with the camera, you should then be able to edit it in Photoshop. (I do the same with my D5K)

If you go to Adobe site and download the RAW DNG convertor, you can convert all of your NEF (or CR2 for Canon) files into DNG files. DNG RAW files can be read by ANY version of Photoshop, and they produce files that are 20% smaller. And the RAW parameters are kept in the DNG file, not tacked on to the NEF/CR2 as a 'side-car' system file. Much better.

This is the link for windows. There's one for MAC too http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Windows

Capture is good but it's pretty RAM hungry - LR or Aperture are probably the easiest and most useful photographic tools there are because of the archive, filing, developing and outputting options they offer..

nx2 is an absolute dog, it's crap.

renders files beautifully but realistically i'd go for lightroom for editing it's pretty much a complete package :) and then perhaps download the gimp for additional touches

I haven't used NX since I bought CS4 and now process using ACR but unless Nikon Capture has dramatically improved, the batch processing is as slow as a funeral.

I can now process a wedding in ACR in less than 1/3rd of the time it was taking in NX.

It does process the files very nicely though.

Chris.

I am now using, and loving Nikon's Capture NX2 !
It's fantastic.......although I sometimes end up doing final finish with Photoshop still (mainly framing my images though !!)
