Hi guys!

I have another couple of stupid newbie questions.

I have had my camera a few months now, and I have quite a few shots that i would like printing. The plan is to take them somewhere for "processing" (such as jessops/boots/tescos/internet?)

My first question is:
Do all these places give the same sort of image quality as each other in their prints? can you advise a particular outlet?

My second question is perhaps more stupid, forgive me:
My Nikon outputs images in a 9x6 profile. The prints I want will be 7x5 or 6x4, so the image is far too long for this standard ratio.
if i just send them to print, will the picture be stretched/distorted in order to fit the profile of the sheet, or will the full length be used so there are black lines top and bottom? or will the place processing them be able to crop the images to the correct size?

I'm not really sure if i need to go through and change all of the image sizes to match, or if they will be ok as they are?

Cheers all!

If you use DS Colour Labs ( www.dscolourlabs.co.uk ) when you use the software, you have the option of either having the image cropped to fit the size you require, or having boarders added so to fit the in full.

Personally, id crop your images down to the required size before sending them off, that way you get the exact picture you want. Or maybe just print them off as 9x6 as you can on DS Colour Labs

Seriously, don't go to any of the places you've mentioned. You will not get anywhere near the quality of print that you would from the established on-line printers. I know you may have to wait a day or two but the better ones (DS Colour Labs, Togsprint, Loxleys etc) usually deliver within 2 days anyway and they are really easy to use.
I usually use DSCL and have nothing but praise for their service and quality.

Jammy sorry to jump in on your thread, but I was actually going to ask this today as well. I think now I'm getting a bit more serious about what I want, I've outgrown Boots and am looking for somewhere that will help showcase my (I'd hardly call it talent) work a bit better. While I've got nothing against them, I just don't feel as though they'll be flexible enough to my whims!

The 6 x 4 print is the same ratio as 6 x9 so you could have them printed to that size no problem.

I would also second the recomendations to use a good quality lab. I can only speak from personal experiance of Loxleys, but I have no reason to doubt the others are OK

Cheers for the feedback! 

I got the other half to drop some photos off at Jessops this morning, and will see what the quality is like. Reason being that I had a voucher for 20 free 7x5’s, and at that point I’d not read any of your replies on the thread.

I will certainly have a look at DSCL for the next set. I notice on their website that they do 7.5 x 5. I wonder if that’d be any good.
The photo books they do will also be a nice for a wedding later this year. Anyone purchased one of these that can recommend them or not?

I worked out that the 6x4 profile is the same as the 9x6, but unfortunately (due to many prints being for an elderly relative who’s eyesight has been better, and the 20 free prints) I decided to re-size them all to 7x5 format.

I find it easier to use Photobox for general printing, and Loxley for clients prints - you can resize in the upload software, zoom, shrink, rotate, crop etc. Saves a lot of time doing it by hand!

I offer my prints in the 3x2 format (6x4, 12x8, 18x12 etc) as it keeps it all the same - but if I get a request for other sizes (10x8, A4, A3 etc), I use the 3x2 photo, but crop it in the upload software. All comes out the same in the end :)

I may be wrong, but I believe Photobox sometimes offer 50 free 6x4's when you sign up...
