Protection filter for 15-85

Hi all,

Hoping to get some advice on which one of these two filters I should get for a Canon EF-S 15-85mm.

The lens hood is on the list of things to get as well, just wanted a filter to protect the lens.

I have a Tiffen one for my 18-55 kit lens, but wondered as this lens is better quality whether this is a suitable quality filter to go with it or whether the Hoya one matches this lens better.

I personally don't use filters. The lens hood and insurance provide enough protection with no loss of IQ.

Indeed, a lens hood is all you need. Really, there's no point in buying a filter unless you are shooting in a sand storm!

I agree with all of the above...

The hood will protect very nicely without affecting the IQ

oh, I thought it was good idea to put a UV or clear filter on the front to protect the glass from say scratches, dust, etc.

If you scratch the filter it's a lot cheaper to replace that than the lens.

I guess not...

Does anyone use filters for this purpose or am I being a bit paranoid??

Well that's half the point of a lens hood, it stops the front element coming into contact with things... The front element is very hard to scratch anyway. Honestly, filters can cause more problems than they solve, such as lens flare and have even been known to jam if dropped actually causing damage to the lens barrel. Add to this image degradation by putting much cheaper glass onto the lens.

In all the years I've used slr's / dslr's I've never scratched a lens. I can think of occasions where I would have if I hadn't used hoods though!

okay, I'll try it without the filter first and just get the hood.
