Can you get Protective skins for camera bodies ?

Like you get for phones etc

To protect from surface scratches etc
 
Do a Google search for EOS 40D camera armour. It can vary in price.
 
Yes as above called Camera Armour, but I have never seen anyone using it.

Seen it in bargain bins for a fiver a couple of years ago but even at that price wasn't tempted TBH. Bulks the camera up a fair bit. If you're accident prone with your kit it might be worth it but it'll still leave the lens exposed to knocks...
 
I think I've still got one for my 50D. Complete and utter rubbish. Avoid unless you're an avid fan of BDSM or your name is Batman.
 
Don't they normalll come with protection? Mine came with a black plastic/metal case covering all the internal components. Stops me accidently poking the insids and reduces water/dust ingress. ;)

More seriously though... Camera prices drop so much that keeping them in perfect cosmetic order isn't really going to do much. Lenses on the other hand hold their value and are worth looking after, unfortunately they wouldn't be protected by camera armour, although you can get neoprene covers for some.
 
i was looking into camera armour protective skins a while ago but what put me off them was iv'e used similar silicone skins on mobile phones and over time they always left rub marks on the phone casings something i didn't want to happen on my camera bodies and opted not to bother with them
i don't know if they do leave rub marks having never tried one but they certainly did on my phone

i think camera bodies are quite robust and not really prone to scratching in normal use and tend to stay in good order
 
I use a company called Lens Protect from Czech Republic to produce all of my lens/camera skins - very useful when shooting in the desert, like me. May be a little over the top depending on what you want to protect your gear from - http://www.martinhales.com/portfolio/

Where are these bargain bins lol ?
 
Have them on both 6D and 7d bodies since they were new. Both camera bodies are still in pristine condition. Fit like a glove and all controls are easily accessible. The rubber gives added grip as well. For the price I think they are well worth the money.

Not suitable though if you want to fit a grip.

Don't knock something if you have not tried it.

Damn , can't have a battery grip on ?
 
No not easily. The ones I have go slightly round the underside of the camera. Whilst this lets you fit a tripod plate with no problems it gets in the way of a grip meaning you cannot tighten the grip on properly.

You can pull the skin up and out of the way to fit the grip but then the skin bulges all the way round along the bottom line of the camera. It does not look brilliant.

Jessops, shortly before xmas 2012...

As Val says try before you buy (Have a fondle of a camera so skinned to see if you like the extra bulk). Dust can and does get between the skins and bodies and can cause rubbing - not sure the things in David's link (English version HERE) keep it completely out.
