hello i was wondering if anybody could give me some information on public liability insurance.basically i have been asked to photograph a full season of club motocross racing but obviously need insurance to get track side.
my problem is ia m not employed as ia m a carer for my wife. would i need to be to have a company to get this insurance or can any joe bloggs get it.

thanks in advance

Anyone can get it, provided they're able to afford the premium. I'd look at specialist photography insurers first.

As above, anyone can buy PL insurance, just google PL insurance photographer’ then google ‘PL insurance’, you’ll probably find that photographers are charged a premium (we often are).

The good news is that’s it’s not ridiculously expensive.

Sorry to be a fool, I understood PL was to cover you damaging other peoples persons or property ? I assume in MX your the one in danger ?

Is this just a club/track rule or is it required for personal reasons ?

Just starting out in sports photography
Would someone explain for me please ?

It covers you if, for example, someone trips over your camera bag, breaks a leg and goes "legal".

Although in that situation, if injured, I would go after the organisers first.

Public Liability is the responsibility of event organisers/venue owners. They now insist on contractors, etc. to have insurance, probably at the request of their insurers, so they can try to claim back any expense after a claim pay out. We have the same issue with music venues.

The reality is that if you tripped up over a bag belonging to a spectator, they would not have PLI but the potential for injury is the same and the fact that one is a professional and one isn't is irrelevant.

Steve.

Anyone can buy public liability insurance. Generally for motorsport photography work you'll need £5million worth of cover, which will cost between £80 and £120 roughly. Sites like moneysupermarket.com will let you do price comparisons for PLI, and big insurers like Direct Line also offer cover.

It is a requirement of the ACU that any photographer who goes trackside must have £2M PLI. I have mine from my kit insurers, InFocus.

Nice to know, cheers

I recently got PL through Eversure. They also do equipment insurance for Business Use. Of course, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, ... and I haven’t had to make a claim yet...

thanks for all the advice my friend is sorting it out for me now ill be back with who i use.it is 5 million for the tracks i will be attending.

thank you

Photoguard are another option for TPL insurance. As has been stated, the ACU state a minimum of £2 million, but most circuits require £5 million.

Daft thing is I could get away with £2 million TPL at the circuit where I am the track photographer , but need to have the £5M for the stalls that I do , at craft and gift fairs, and market stalls, require £5M , selling my prints.

I would proper trackside insurance, expensive and hard to sort..
Why would anyone go after the organisers when they have let you on, I’m trying to get all tracks & clubs to stop people going trackside with PLI as it’s useless.. doesn’t cover you at all...
