Public Liabilty Insurance

Now that I have my Sigma 70-200mm I can't wait to photograph some football matches.

I contacted Blyth Spartans from The Blue Square Conference North League to request permission to take photos at one of their home games. I was told I needed a licence from The Football Conference League. I contacted them and was told I will need Public Liability Insurance before they will issue the licence.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I need £2,000,000 worth of cover but I don't want to pay a fortune.

Public liability insurance amounts look silly, eg £2M, but they are quite standard. (higher leagues WILL probably want higher amounts) There are a number of places to go for such things but I would go to a specialist in photography insurance. Also make sure they know exactly what you are covering and at what level ie just "professional photographer" is not good enough! That policy would probably exclude sports grounds due to the high possibility of VERY expensive claims. Imagine accidentally tripping Ronaldo up! (apart from the fact that he would probably land 30 yards away and demand a penalty!)

If for example you are covering football and it is non league then it should be vastly cheaper than the same amount of cover for a premier league photographer. Read the small print too. Don't hide anything and ask questions.

I sold insurance 15 years ago and back then the mention of football would be a non starter for normal policies. I have been a long time out of that industry so I will leave specific companies to try to others.

I use Lifesure at £5 million costs around £97 for the first year!

Ensure that you make a full disclosure. I approached Photoguard about PL insurance for an exhibition and was advised that PL through Photoguard would only cover me in my 'photographic activities'. Apparently Photoguard consider an exhibition as not being a 'photographic activity'. So, always worth calling the company/broker to clarify matters.

Thanks for the options suggested. I've managed to get the required cover I need for £120. I feel I have covered all the angles I hopefully won't need!
