I like him do not drive, and do the majority of traveling by rail. So here's a thread where we non-drivers can share our collective knowledge. I can update the OP so we get a nice list. Lists are good.

One rule your journey must not be more than 2 hours.

The north.

From Sheffield

Train.
Nearest/quickest sea town. Cleethorpes, 1:45 hours, adult return £19

York. 1 hour £18 adult return

Hope Valley. I know it well, only bother with getting off at Edale, other stations are too far from anything interesting/the walks and the Hathersage inn is now a camping shop/italian sandwich bar.

Chesterfield. 10 mins. There is a church with a bendy spire that has been photographed about 4 billion times, go to the church end of the high street, then the right hand side of the bank of scotland, get the 80/82 bus to bolsover (you want the dayrider at £8) there is a castle, it is stunning.

Bus.

(?)Matlock, Bakewell. Plenty of them but the evening time table may catch you out. Buxton is full of chavs, avoid.

272 castleton. Get off at the Fox house inn on the sheffield moor or Castleton itself. Bus is reliable.

273/241 to take you to the Ladybower inn. Good luck, you are going to need it.
