Hello,

Sorry if I may sound a little naive, but could someone please give me a brief 'low-down' on each of these (and any other's I've likely missed!) & where they may or may not be featured under that 'title'?
A few people have been using them very loosely & I'm beginning to think they think they all mean the same thing.. hum, can someone put me straight?

Published

Editorial

Commercial

thank you very much :D

Hiya!

I use the term 'editorial' to define commissioned work that is intended for publications, i.e magazines and newspapers etc.

Commercial is a little too loose as it can describe any commissioned or commerce related work.

I could on the other hand be a dribbling cabbage and have it all upside down ;)

My version:

Published: The image has appeared somewhere that someone other than the originater has put it - paper, news site, magazine etc . It may or may not have been paid for (paid is better as it keeps people who want images used to paying for them instead of getting everything for free).

Editiorial. A newsworthy image and one that does not (usually) need a model release, generally used in newspapers or magazines to accompany news or information stories.

Commercial: Not specific enough, but probably an image that accompanies an advert of some kind.

Thanks for that :) I was quite confident in your reply until you mentioned the cabbage!!

A few photographers I follow on sites like twitter etc, keep posting that they're working on some amazing new editorial, but then there's never a follow up on where it's published or featured.. it just ends up in their portfolio, and now it's confused me as I'm working on my website & I want a space for published work but am getting all flustered by too many different terms!

Thanks for your take on things, seems people might have different ideas of what fits where.. The photographers I'm talking about do 'editorial fashion shoots'.. hardly news worthy, but maybe article worthy.. hmmmmm

Cabbages have a habit of doing that

Jokes aside, I'd go ahead and name that section 'Editorial', I do believe it's the definitive category for any images that are commissioned for newspapers and magazines etc.

For me it goes thus:

Commercial - either commissioned or taken on-spec for unaccompanied publication anywhere...includes advertising and product-photography.

Editorial - either commissioned or taken on-spec specifically to accompany a written article an any subject...can include portraits, both posed and environmental.

Published - any images that were published anywhere - usually used in the past-tense.
