Several years ago, when I spent a whole month rescuing a friend's PC from a slew of infections, I think I did it by transferring the files to a Win98 PC via my router.
I'm not interested in having iTunes software, and I doubt that such a transfer makes the tracks usable with iTunes on your new machine, but there's plenty of alternative player programs.
if you have itunes and an ipod then your purchased tunes will be on Ipod and can be transfered across. you can link 5 computers to your account. so need to install itunes on new laptop and activate your account (user name and password)
plug in your ipod and it will only transfer the purchased stuff. you can always back up all your stuff onto disc and restore from these on your new laptop. Once done you can deauthorise the account from old laptop purchased music cant then be played on this defunked laptop.
have my purchased stuff in my work computer and all other stuff on laptop then i have something to listen to while at work
Get yourself an external hard drive and copy your music to that from your old laptop hard drive.
You can then just plug it into your new laptop and transfer it.
I actually keep mine (20,000+ songs) on my external drive and manually manage my music on the iPod. Don't forget to de-authorise your old laptop in iTunes if you're not going to use it. And also to Authorise your new one.
thanks for the help guys, ive installed itunes on my new machine so i think im going to go with the ipod route. All my non bought music is on my hardrive i just didnt think you could just copy the itunes music.
Ill get on that when i get home and see what happen
Your ITMS songs will be on your laptop's HD as well (assuming you've not deleted them!) an will copy accross just like your non-bought ones.
iTunes will just ask you to authorise your computer the first time you try to play a purchased song.
If you want to keep all of your ratings, play counts etc... then it becomes a bit more complicated (though it's easier on OSX than it is in windows)
