After reading about many people on here saying how important it is to back up files/photos I've bought myself an external hard drive :)

Seagate 1tb, 7200rpm.
Runs very quietly.
£59.99

I know there is cheaper online (Western Digital 2tb for £55) but some reviews didn't look to promising.

Hope I've made the right choice.

Question...
I have backed up Lightroom Catalogs to the hard drive And Published all the photos to the hard drive.
When opening a photo in the hard drive it is displayed in it's edited form. (not the original)
Is this because I have the Catalog saved on the hard drive aswell?
If this is the case, I don't mind. I would prefer to have the edited versions backed up instead of the originals. I know this isn't maybe the way to do things and people like having the original file. But if I can't edit an image to a level I think is 'acceptable' I delete it anyway - therefore wanting to back up the 'acceptable' image/edit/file

if you exported them thats probably why. you need to move the files using my computer then relocated them in LR.

Under 'Publish Services' in Lightroom there are options to publish to Facebook, Flickr and Hard Drive. I 'Set Up' the hard drive option and was able to publish all selected images. They are now on my hard drive as the edited version.
 
yup thatll be it. all youve done is export the edited copies so youre not using your originals any more.

just move the files in windows. when you then load up LR it'll show the old albums greyed out, right click each one and locate the new folder.
 
Doing this will mean I save the originals to the external hard drive? And not the edited versions?

Is this the preferred method of backing up instead of backing up final edits only?

Edit: Backing up the originals in common sense really I guess. Not sure why I thought backing up the edits was the best idea :s

For backing up you are making a copy not moving anything. As Neil says do it all from windows explorer using copy and paste - or use something like synctoy from microsoft (assuming you are using windows) as once set up it is easy to update your copy next time you backup.

Just downloaded Synctoy, very helpful thanks a lot.
I'll use it to copy all new/modified files from my PC to my External HDD.
