I have read a post on flickr regarding a guy using the new PW on his 5DmkII to sync at 1/500th sec! How do the PW enable him to do this when the xsync is only 1/200th???

He's doing very well to get 1/500sec with that particular camera (it's sometimes hard to see the shutter blind creeping in with a low f/number for example) but 1/320sec should be possible.

Basically, the camera's x-sync speed is set by manufacturers quite conservatively and there is a time window in the action of the shutter. With the new Pocket Wizards you can tweak the timing of the flash trigger and set it right at the limit, right at the edge of the window, according to each individual shutter.

:agree:
I have the new pw's and problems with them too! but I have managed to synch at 1/8000 with good results (EOS50D) when they work that is

Still working at the problems :D

if its the ttl flex jobbies you aren't synching you're using high speed sync on the flashgun which rapes batteries

if not I need to buy PWs :D

To answer the question, which my previous post didn't :)
Basically the flash is strobed! i.e. it pulses the flash continuously as the gap between first and second curtain passes over the sensor.. as opposed to a single burst of flash .... Very clever stuff ... :D

It is the flex / mini set up..

That's what I think too  however in theory! they are set up as they should be ... but not convinced I'm using the Hypersynch ... Just HSS as per Canon ... Still testing though

You mean High Speed Sync, which is a function of the gun (lots of guns do it) not the Pocket Wizards.

The OP is talking about Hypersync, which is a unique feature of the new TTL Pocket Wizards.

I'm also talking about Hypersyinc using the flex mini combo! What I meant was that I'm not sure the PW's are using Hypersync? (mine) just the Canon HSS ... ?

LOL You've lost me now ;)

Hypersync is a function of the TTL Pocket Wizards that lets you fine tune the x-sync speed up a bit, but not much. Less than a stop max.

If you are getting sync at 1/8000sec as you posted earlier, that is High Speed Sync and is a function of the gun, not the PW as such. You don't need a PW for HSS.

:agree: but I thought the PW controlled the HSS function and if the PW is not functioning correctly themn you won't have reliable HSS?
