Hello,

I have got a couple of heavyweight tripods for my DSLR's but I need a smaller compact one for when I'm on holiday.

I will be using it with a micro four thirds (or equivalent ) camera, so don't need one that can carry a lot of weight, but I'll mostly be using it for long exposures so do need it to be very stable.

I've had a look online and the Gitzo Traveller looks really nice, though quite expensive, I was wondering if there were any cheaper alternatives that would be suitable?. I want this to be a lifelong purchase so am prepared to pay £££ for the Gitzo if nothing comes close to matching it's Size/Weight/Stability/Performance.

Thanks for reading

I've got a Velbon CX Mini, not a full size tripod but very sturdy and easily holds my 50D. It also packs down small enough to fit in my Fastpack 250 and doesn't break the bank :)

Not sure if this would be any use - the trek tech t'pod (Amazon £34.99)

A fellow TP'r did ask me about it & this iswhat I told them...

the latest version with the magmount head (00131) which is a lot better & more secure..

Height wise it stands fully extended at just a fraction under 13inches... Thats without a camera fitted (obviously )

I did do a review on Amazon T'pod & the this was the T'pod Review

I've had a gripped D300s & Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 100-300 EX f4 DG APO & the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR on this little tripod with no issues...

All I can say is that its quite expensive for what it is though @ £34.99 but its nice & light and small enough to fit in any camera bag when storing it...

Would I recommend it - Yep totally...

Gitzo Traveller has spawned lots of immitations, most of them made in China and most of them very high quality at much lower cost. TBH the choice is almost overwhelming, in carbon or alli, with this head or that head.

I like the carbon Benro Travel Angels off ebay, very light and beautifully made. J-series and B-series ball heads are also very good - recommended trader here, fast service and nothing extra to pay :) http://stores.ebay.com/DCs-Photogra...03382018&_sid=896782438&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322 You can get the same thing from UK dealers for 50% more.

Feisol are good, as used by the army I think (they also have a UK mail-order distributor if you google, and not too pricey). Giottos are in most shops. Triopo are another good quality brand. All Chinese made, all similar designs.

Manfrotto 785B is a cracking set of legs if you want small.

They go full size but are 4 sections (or 5?) and folds up really small, quite a bit smaller than most other small tripods.

The problem is that it comes with a crappy ballhead, which is meant to be non-removeable, but I hacksawed it off, banged some nuts of the right size into the tube and then screwed on a tripod head of my choice.

For me it's perfect as it goes about head height but is smaller than any other tripod I've seen when folded.

Had the same dillema and opted for the Benro Travel Angel off ebay for just over £200.

The bottom legs on the Gitzo are far too thin and the head on the giottos isn't great but ok for your micro two thirds i would think. Very happy with the Benro for the price :)

Thanks for all the replies, you've given me a lot of options to look into
