just a quikie but i haven't used a teleconverter since film! and was wondering if the tc's available these days lose much in terms of quality....and could anybody recommend any decent non brand cheaper but good kind!!??? Thanks for your help.
 
it will depend on the lens you're using it with, what brand and what 'strength' of tc you use... on a fast prime lens you'll see very little drop in quality when using a 1.4x tc and some of them will even take a 2x well enough. However used on a cheapers/slower lens the effect of even a 1.4x can be very obvious. The best off brand ones that I've used are the Kenko Pros, not quite as good as the Canon but better than the Sigma I had.
 
Depends on the tele-converter and the lens used. Some work well and some don't work at all! Kenko are the popular choice.
 
TC were mainly designed for prime lenses due to the wide f1.4/f1.8 apertures that primes had made it a decent f2.8 lens when the teleconverter was added. nowadays people dont tend to use them with zooms unless they are desperate for the reach, but there is a sever light loss warning.
 
Just remember the effect on max aperture, most AF stops working at F8, so if you have an F4 and a 2x tc you will lose af on that combination, or at least that's my take on it, anyone confirm this, at the very least the viewfinder will dim and as cropped body digiatal viewfinders are already dim (compared to ff or film) you may not like the effect?

thanks every body for the feedback , really appreciate it, sounds like things are just the same as during the film days then!!! it was going to be used on a canon kit lens (55-200 Ef 4.5/5.6) sounds like its not worth bothering to get one...i'll get my 300mm f2.5 first!! :'(
