Question about focus stacking using a movable stage.

I've seen a lot of discussion regarding using a movable stage for focus stacking macro images. But it seems to me that it would only "work" if the lens was in line with the stage movement. And if the camera was at an angle to the stage/subject it wouldn't work well.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Am I right?

Unless you're trying for some artistic effects then you're spot on.....the movement is generally along the axis of the lens and perpendicular to the sensor.
