Question about lenses

Now i have a sony dsc h9, and its apparture is between 2.7 and 8.1 . Am thinking of buying the sony alpha 350, and i noticed that the lens it comes with 18-70 lens has an apparture of 3.1-5.6. so doest it mean that the dsc h9 has a wider apparture range than the lens that comes with the alpha 350??

Ive never used a dslr so am not sure if you can fix the apparture in the camera like in the dsc h9, and the apparture of the lens just adds to it or something

So please can anyone explain to me ?? cse i want to buy it, but if this lens will not provide me what the h9 provides, then ill wait until i have more mney and buy a better lens

Hi Quack18

I came from an Sony H2 to a Canon 40D, so i can appreciate the learning curve you are about to experience.

With your apertures the Sony lens 18-70 will be 3.1 at the 18mm range of the zoom closing to 5.6 at the 70mm end.

the H9 will do more than the 350 initially, the H9 has a longer zoom to begin with. The 350 or any other dslr for that matter will require at least 3 lenses to achieve the same zoom range, the H9 is a pain in the bum to use manually, a dslr will give you more control and easier access to that control and make taking creative shots much easier.

Looking at your blogspot and the tap drip pics it's obvious that you want more creative control of your photography and a dslr is the way to go but unless you have money to burn you will feel the loss of zoom, i know i did.



you have lots to consider:

are you sure you want a sony?
is a stash of magic gate cards swinging you in that direction?

The Sony DSC H9 has an aperture range of f/2.7 to f/4.5 at the wide end of its zoom, and f/4.5 to f/8 at the long end of its zoom.

The Sony Alpha kit lens has an aperture range of f/3.5 to f/32 at the wide end of its zoom, and f/5.6 to f/32 at the long end of its zoom.

But the differences between a DSLR and a bridge camera like the H9 are enormous, far far greater than this relatively minor detail of the specifications.
 
Thanks alot to all of you for ** replies, u have helped alot. am kind of disappointed with the loss of zoon, because i tend to use it sometimes, and also the wide aparture range of 2.8 i use it sometimes.
The only problem i have is the money, i can only afford to buy the cam now, but not any lenses other than the one it comes with, so i worried will that reduce my creativity, or since its a jump from a bridge to a dslr, its for sure going to give me alot of new dimensions experiment with

If you buy the DSLR with the kit lens you won't regret it! As said above it will just give you so much more creative control of your pictures. You can always keep the H9 for occasions when you need the extra reach of the zoom, until you can afford to pick up a longer lens for the DSLR, say a 70-200, 70-300 (or whatever can be bought in sony fit).
