No idea how do help you add the colour, but I think the tutorials section is closed for threads, if a tutorial is written mods or admin move it into that section.

I do this hand colouring commercially, and it's largely a matter of using selective masks and applying the colour with an opacity which leaves the underlying image still visible. Flesh tones can be a sod to get right.

Not all monotone images really suit the process, and sometimes you may need to drastically lighten the image before you start, and then adjust levels as a final step when it's all finished. It helps if you can get good quality hi res scans of the photos to work on. There's a couple of before and after examples in the photo restoration gallery on my web site.

I have to say it's not easy and I still find it a challenge to produce something that doesn't look totally false. Having said that this work can now be done to a much higher standard than previously, when it was done with air brushing directly onto the print.

Care to post it, maybe I can have a crack at it. If not, PM me the pic

I'd be interested to hear how you get on - I've thought about trying this with some 1940's pics of my parents.

CT's right. It can be a labourios job, not difficult in theory, but takes some time to get it right.

One trick you can try is put the orriginal image on a new layer, that way you can lower it's opacity when you start to add colours. If it's to light you can darken it or vice versa.

Agreed flesh can be a real pain. Even using the colour picker to get a reference colour doesn't always work. I suspect it's because youve got an underlying monochrome image that you are colouring with a "flat" colour. One tip ,don't overdo the colour.

Having said that I've seen some orriginal hand coloured images, and whilst some are excellent most do look "hand coloured". However in the days before true colour photography that was probably more than good enough

That would be really good if u manage to do it! Good Luck!

thanx guy's
I will post the picture next week when I get my new cable modem as it drops the Internet quite frequently.Been terrible for about a week sick of complain to them so new modem soon Hope it works.sometimes net OK like now then i cannot view any pages for hours at a time/

I don't want to colour the full picture in just say the brides dress, gloves, reign, shoes possible fathers tie and suit IE I can remember the dress was a light pink same as shoes cloves etc fathers suit charcoal grey So still want it to retain a lot of B+W
