Question about Red Snapper tripods.

Hello everyone!

This is my first post here, even though I'd been registered on this forum for a while.
I've treated myself with my first dslr recently and now it's time to get a tripod. I've narrowed my choice down to Red Snapper based on people's reviews here, now it's just to decide which one. Could someone tell me (Red Snapper owners perhaps) if 283 Alloy and 283CF are sort of the same models, just one is alloy and other carbon fibre? I mean how do they compare in terms of build quality? If they are identical apart of materials I'd probably go for the alloy version as it's almost three times cheaper and not that much heavier, plus it comes as an offer with a 3-way head at moment.
I've read people's posts about alloy version and it looks that most if not all of them got nothing bad to say about it.
I'll appreciate any comments and advices from all!

With regards,

dai

I believe they are identical. You are right, one is a carbon fibre version of the other.

Contact Joe on here (username Redsnapper). He was massively helpful and as such I'm taking delivery of a 283 tomorrow, with a 583 3-way panning head

oh yeah, go for the deal which is 283 and 583 head (£69??). Apparently that 3-way head is much better than the one that comes free with it

I don't know them personally, but what you've said doesn't surprise me.

Carbon fibre is very expensive and very light. The main reason for a light tripod is if you plan to carry it a long way, if not then an alloy one will be fine and the heavier legs will probably give you a steadier base anyway :)

I've just bought the rs-284 and even though it's an alloy one it's still more than light enough to take hiking etc, unless you're a weakling! The case is really comfy too.

Thanks for the rapid responses guys!

I think I'll go for the alloy version then. I can't find 583 head that you suggested Simon, unless you ment 528 model. My initial plan was to buy a RSH-12 ball head, so the one which comes on offer is just a nice bonus. I'll ring them tomorrow to find out more about it.

Thanks again for quick responses !

Yes. I was, of course, wrong about the head model number! :bonk:

Mine should be arriving tomorrow, so I can let you know about weight etc tomorrow evening?

I was very tempted by the carbon, but I've heard the standard alloy ones are already a lot lighter than, say, a Manfrotto

Yeah, please let me know Simon. Looking at the specs of both again, the carbon one actually 370g lighter. Don't know if 370g worth 90 quid extra. Decisions, decisions...
BTW looking at your location, looks like we are neighbors, I live in S. Norwood.:)

You won't be disappointed, I got one for myself for Christmas, the quality is first class. Comes with a great carry case too. I might get a ball head for it soon, as it will go in the case without removing a handle from the panning head.

Palace fan?!

I live nearer central Croydon.

I'll come on tomorrow evening and let you know my thoughts re: weight.

Please find below my in depth review of the RS283 and RSH528 3-way panning head, having taken delivery of it at work today..

Unbelievably awesome, value for money, bargain-ous joy.

The End

p.s. do not worry about the weight of the alloy. It is so much lighter than tripods made by companies like Manfrotto. I feel the carbon one may possibly be too light. If that's possible.

very much so. This is my first ever tripod, so had a bit of fiddling about for a while. Especially fitting the QR plate to the camera (I'm still not sure I've done it properly, but it seems to be working fine). My first tripod, and I can't see myself having to upgrade, replace etc. Ever.

Thanks for coming back with an excellent review Simon!:D I'm glad you happy with the purchase.
You've convinced me straight on. Going to order it tomorrow. Does anybody know if RSH-12 ball head comes with a QR plate or do I have to buy it separately?

Spoke to Joe over the phone today. He just confirmed that they are identical models, apart of the tubes materials (alloy and CF). Haven't ordered it today as they did't have ball heads in stock, which they should get by Friday. So should wait untill then.
