Yes
Just a quick one,

Is it possible to zoom the viewfinder or live view (not the lens), so that you can see some detail and see how well you've focused on something?

yes..... press the + button twice whilst in live view mode..

Will try that now. I know you can zoom on on a shot you've just taken in playback mode and scroll around it but would be really useful before taking the shot.

Yes, it works in live view too!

How do you guys determine whether something is in focus when using the viewfinder? Or do you just take a test shot and check it on the screen?

the red blobs will flicker when you hit focus (assuming you're manually focussing).

Otherwise I believe you can get different focus plates with the old style funky prisms on.

you have to manually focus in liveview, and you can determine the focus better at 5X and 10X.

because it looks in focus?:suspect:

DO you not find that a bit difficult to tell in a small viewfinder?

I find stuff can often look in focus in the viewfinder but then I get it into lightroom at full size and the detail is not as in focus as I'd thought. Being able to zoom the live view gives you this ability but I prefer using the viewfinder.

A funky focus screen sounds like your best bet.
