Yes
i was bought one of these, from amazon , and it appeared not to work when i checked it , although i am a total newbie when it comes to flashguns

this may seem like a simple question but just wanted to confirm it with someone.

should you should be able to power up the flashgun un-atatched to anything?

Yep, it should work completely detached, the only contact between it and the camera is the firing connection. It should just be a case of hold down the power buttong until it comes on, alter the power settings if need be and you can use the test button to fire it!

At the risk of sounding like a cock, I take it you have fitted charged batteries and made sure they are all inserted correctly.

yes , i got some new ones from the shop and then some more new one to check them

oh well back to the shop it goes

Do you mean new rechargeables? If so, did you charge them first? While there are some batteries that are pre-charged and ready to use from the pack, many types of rechargeable battery will be sold pretty much flat and will need charging before use.

OK. They should work . However, it's worth noting that rechargeable batteries are better suited to use in flash guns for longer life and quicker recycling, plus they work out to be more economical in the long run.

It does sound like you got a bum flash. Good luck with the replacement. :)

nope , just some normal duracell/energisers

I wouldn't recommend "normal" batteries for the YN-460, or indeed any flashgun, decent (2000mAh +) rechargeables are the way to go. If you are using normal ones make sure they are new - flashguns eat batteries ;)
