If you were NOT guaranteed a wage from a photoshoot...(i mean like a show not one person booking)... and the travel was a good 1.5 hours.... would you go?

take into account all factors before you answer.

:)

im just taking into account that im not a pro and people are well aware of this. (im not crap either i do take good shots)!...

I am a student and im not sure i can justify not guaranteeing a wage to put petrol in my car.

tbh it would be good for experience, however the time and money to me is an issue, as marketing myself more i know i can get paid work. I just havent....! (uni commitments).

It just means a full day out without a wage guarantee. I am not being ungrateful but im trying to be realistic.!!

Doing a 1 on one photoshoot its the same thing, however im more or less guaranteed payment..

That would depend on what you expect to get from it.

For example, I sometimes shoot at kids nurseries. The last one I did, there was about 80 kids, shot over 2 days. There's no guarantee of any orders, so in theory, I could spend 2 days there, do some basic editing, provide proofs etc and not sell a single image...not a great scenario.

As it was, it yielded just under £2K, so yes, worthwhile in that situation...but it's pics of kids, one can assume you'll sell photos providing they're of a decent standard. As for your situation, like I said, what can you conservatively expect in terms of orders? How much would you need to take in order value for you to be satisfied, at the very least? How many orders would you require to reach that level? Is that amount of orders likely?

It's a bit of a gamble, really...you have to weigh it up, and then decide whether or not you think it's worth a punt...

Honestly... if i was taking a wage (i value myself on what i earn in my other job which isnt a lot!)

I need to sell min 12 photos (basic ones) to make any sort of profit. thats not including my time really.

If it were a more local show then it wouldnt be an issue as my petrol would be less. (ive done a 7 hour show before and got paid nadda howevver i didnt mind as it was local and petrol cost me almost nothing and at that time it was all experience.)

I understand what you mean. My gut feeling is that you're reluctant to do the shoot though, unless you can cover your costs and for all it's good for experience, you don't feel like "I need to do this shoot!!"

Is there any way your costs could be covered?

No. The other tog has pulled out, and before this (what i gather) they were charging him for them being there.... as it happens i wont be charged for being official photographer.

Its not a massive show and as i dont print on the day this is my other concern - i have business cards (hundreds lol!)....

I do actually really want to go... i just cannot afford at this moment in time to be out of pocket. hence my reluctance.

If I thought the resulting images would be useful to me;
if I though there were networking opportunities that might generate other paying jobs;
if I thought it would be fun;
if I wasn't doing anything else that day...

if it didn't cost me too much...

or any combination of the above.

Yes, why not?

It's a chicken and egg situation - the experience will probably be invaluable and you're getting out there and getting known. It could be well worthwhile even without the guaranteed dosh. Try to make sure your pics are of such a quality that people will want to buy them.

People taking advantage of you is something else though - so it's a decision for you.

Is there a cheaper way for you to travel? eg - a train station near where you are and the location? Just a thought as that could save you a bit.

I personally think that you could sell more than 12 - but market it right - give your business cards out, maybe some flyers too, make it easy for them to see the images - without them being able to nab them. I know it's a gamble, but I'd say go for it - otherwise you'll torment yourself for ages with the "what if..."

haha i know your all right :)

I should go for it tbh, i just cant afford to loose any money as i have a diploma sat here waiting to be done that ive just spent £400 to do that to help with my career (no,not photography... sorry :p )
