Be recently moved to a house with a lovely big garden and am noticing all kinds of birds visiting.

What are the best settings to use on my 60D to freeze the wings when they are flying?
I am managing to get some shots of them but their wings are always a blur.

Many thanks for any advice :)

1/1000 i recon should just about do it, if not bump it up abit more, dont be afraid to bump up the ISO eigher 1600 can be quite acceptable.

use the shutter speed mode and experiment with different shutter speeds and turn the auto iso as well, if necessary.

Your going to need a nice fast shutter speed if your wanting to freeze the wings  what lens are you using?

As Matt says, a fast shutter speed will "freeze" the action if thats what you are after...

What shutter speed where you using for the shots you weren't happy with ?

The faster the better really, I recently got some at 1/1250sec and there was still a little bit of blur at the wingtips. A lot depends on what type of bird you shoot, the smaller the bird normally means the faster the wing beat. The best I've got so far were shot on my 5D3 and 70-200 2.8 IS L at 1/2000sec with ISO 100 and they were seagull/pigeon sized birds, while I've got some great flying duck shots at 1/800sec as the wings were beating slower. Anything smaller and I usually wait till it's perched before I shoot it cause I'd probably take loads of photos of the sky and nothing else.
