i just wondered if any of you who have the sigma 17-70mm lens use it for portraits, as it seems to have a decent range and large aperture, and also quite a good price at the moment, if you don't what lens's do you use ? preferably nikon owners, many thanks in advance

The 17-70 is only 2.8 for a few millimetres at the wide end. For portrait lengths you are looking more around f/4 as the maximum aperture.

As I discovered my nifty fifty has a back focus problem I ended up using my Sigma 17-70 at Christmas with my nephew (saying that makes me sound older than I am!) and there was not enough depth of field.

Of third party lenses the Tamron 28-75mm lens is very popular and has a constant 2.8 aperture, as does the Sigma 24-70mm EX. Both are usually about £50 more than the 17-70mm, while Sigma also has a 28-70mm f/2.8 EX for the same price. I do not know anything about Nikkor lenses but if they are anything like Canon's equivalent models in this range they will cost twice as much as the above and unless you need faster and quieter focussing will not justify the extra.

I recently went through my entire portraiture portfolio and averaged out the focal lenghts. I found that the majority of shots were taken between 45 and 55mm. So I have decided to invest in the Sigma 30mm f1.4 EX DC HSM for this kind of work. Will be laying off the 'nifty fifty' as I have lost faith and the 18-70 DX will be replaced with another Sigma, the 18-50 f2.8 EX DC Macro (new version). Will be looking to get the 85 f1.8 in the future as 20% of my shots are taken with the 18-70 @ 70mm (105mm on APS-C). Diffuclt with cropped sensors, wish they went straight into full frame sensors.

thanks kb, the only thing i don't understand is if most of your shots are between 45 and 55mm why are you going for a 30mm lens, or am i missing something here

The crop factor. 30mm is equivelent to 45mm on an APS-C sized digital sensor. So a standard 18-70 DX lens is equivelent to 27-105mm with a 1.5x crop factor.

ok did'ent realize that, just i thought the crop factor did'ent apply on a dedicated APS-C DSLR camera lens, i thought it would be 30mm, i think i'm getting a bit confused on this, will have to have a good read up on it.

I wish it was like that. The Sigma 10-20 would be a sweet wide angle ft it was!

I have rencently started to look at this lens and if anybody has any portrait shots using it I would like to see them.
